This data collection offers information on Americans' participation in the arts, such as ballet, opera, plays, museums, concerts, and literature, during 1997. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, and conducted by Westat Corporation of Rockville, Maryland, this survey is the fourth edition of the Survey of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPA), with prior SPPA surveys having been conducted in 1982, 1985, and 1992.

Data are provided on labor force activity for the week prior to the survey. Comprehensive data are available on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 15 years old and over. Also shown are personal characteristics such as age, sex, race, marital status, veteran status, household relationship, educational background, and Hispanic origin. In addition, the file provides supplemental data on participation, activities, and frequency of participation in the arts of persons 18 years of age or older.
